Freshlyground Returns With “Welele” and New Lead Vocalist Mbali Makhoba

South African multi-award-winning band Freshlyground has returned with a new Afro-pop single titled “Welele”. After a five-year break, the release marks a fresh and exciting chapter for the group. At the same time, it signals a renewed sense of purpose for one of the country’s most loved bands.

Sung in isiXhosa, “Welele” blends African rhythms with modern pop sounds. As a result, the song carries a clear message of hope, strength, and emotional healing. The band uses simple but powerful ideas to connect with listeners across generations.

“Welele” speaks to moments of pain and uncertainty. In particular, it encourages listeners to face hardship without losing faith. At the same time, the song reminds people that difficult situations can change. For many listeners, it offers comfort and reassurance. In the end, it sends a clear message that better days are possible.

The band paused its work in late 2019. At that point, lead vocalist Zolani Mahola chose to focus on her solo career. As a result, questions arose about Freshlyground’s future. However, the bond between the band members never faded.

“After five years away, we realised the love for playing together never left us,” the band said. Because of this, the music continued to call them back. Over time, fans kept asking when the band would return. That support confirmed that the music still mattered.

Most importantly, this new era introduces Mbali Makhoba as Freshlyground’s lead vocalist. She grew up in Cape Town’s Imizamo Yethu township and brings a strong voice and confident stage presence. From the start, the connection was clear.

“Mbali walked into the rehearsal room and we connected immediately,” the band shared. Soon after, the group began writing music together. Beyond the music, Makhoba’s personal journey reflects modern South African life. Recently, she became the first person in her extended family to travel overseas. During this time, she performed at the Lalela Foundation gala fundraiser in New York City.

Soon after reuniting, Freshlyground returned to the stage. Their first show back took place at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in late 2024. On that night, the band performed to a sold-out crowd of 5,000 fans. Because of the strong response, they knew the time was right to record again.

Behind the scenes, producer JB Arthur worked on “Welele”. The song was written and composed by Mbali Makhoba, Simon Eric Attwell, Peter David Cohen, Neil John Francis Hawks, Julio Sigauque, and Christian Bakalanga Amba. In terms of release, BridgeNorth Music released the single. Meanwhile, Freeground Records, administered by Sony Music Publishing, manages the publishing.

Earlier, Freshlyground released “Jabula”, the first single from their upcoming album, in November 2025. Later, the band released “Welele” on 16 January 2026. Looking ahead, Freshlyground confirmed that a third single will be released next month. After that, the full album is expected in April.

Overall, “Welele” marks a confident return for Freshlyground. At the same time, it proves that the band’s message of hope, unity, and resilience remains as strong as ever.
