Suspended EMPD acting chief, Julius Mkhwanazi, still expects to get his job back, it emerged in his recent bail application at the Germiston Magistrate court.
Mkhwanazi said he still intends to contest the position of EMPD Chief, despite the criminal cases against him. He claims the charges are being used to derail his bid for the top post.
The State, however, has alleged that his appointment as deputy chief around mid-2023 was procedurally irregular. Charge sheets presented in court contend that he bypassed mandatory competency assessments, while some interview scoring sheets were not signed by all panel members.
Prosecutors have also alleged that he received an unjustified salary increase within his first month in office, lifting his total package to R1.79 million.
Mkhwanazi’s legal troubles have widened in recent months. His arrest forms part of investigations linked to the Madlanga Commission’s Recommendations Task Team (CRTT) and testimony heard before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into maladministration and criminality. He is currently out on R50 000 bail granted by the Germiston Magistrate’s Court. In April, he was separately granted R30 000 bail by the Boksburg Magistrate’s Court on charges of alleged impersonation and culpable homicide.
