Iran produced one of the most disciplined defensive displays of the FIFA World Cup 2026 on Sunday, frustrating highly-rated Belgium in a hard-fought 0-0 draw in Los Angeles.

Heading into the match, Belgium were favourites to secure all three points, boasting a squad packed with European stars including Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku. However, Iran showed resilience, tactical discipline and determination to earn a valuable point in Group G.

The Asian giants absorbed wave after wave of Belgian attacks, with goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand emerging as one of the heroes of the evening. The experienced shot-stopper produced several crucial saves to deny Belgium and keep Iran firmly in the contest.

Iran also threatened going forward and thought they had found a breakthrough at one stage, only for the goal to be ruled out for offside. Their disciplined defensive structure continued to frustrate Belgium throughout the encounter.

The match carried added significance as Iran entered the fixture amid difficult travel and logistical challenges surrounding their World Cup campaign. Coach Amir Ghalenoei had publicly voiced concerns about limited preparation time before the clash, yet his players responded with a determined performance on the pitch.

For Belgium, the result will be viewed as a missed opportunity. Despite dominating possession and creating the better chances, they lacked the cutting edge required to break down Iran’s organised defence.

The draw leaves Group G finely balanced heading into the final round of fixtures. Iran will face Egypt in a crucial encounter, while Belgium take on New Zealand, with qualification for the knockout stages still up for grabs.

In a World Cup often dominated by football’s traditional powerhouses, Iran reminded the world that determination, organisation and belief can neutralise even the biggest names. If they can carry this spirit into their final group match, the Iranians could yet script one of the tournament’s most memorable stories.
