Johannesburg, South Africa – The Springboks kicked off their 2026 Nations Championship campaign in emphatic fashion, overpowering England 45-21 at Ellis Park on Saturday in a performance that reaffirmed their status as one of world rugby’s dominant forces.
Despite losing captain Siya Kolisi and veteran lock Eben Etzebeth before kick-off due to injury, the world champions showed remarkable depth and composure. South Africa stormed into an early 17-0 lead, leaving England scrambling to recover.
England fought back bravely before halftime, reducing the deficit to just three points at 17-14. However, the second half belonged entirely to the Springboks, whose physical dominance, clinical finishing and relentless pressure proved too much for the visitors.
South Africa crossed the whitewash seven times, with tries from Thomas du Toit, Cheslin Kolbe, Kurt-Lee Arendse, Grant Williams, Jesse Kriel, Malcolm Marx and Ben-Jason Dixon. Kolbe added five successful conversions to cap off an outstanding individual display.
The victory extends the Springboks’ impressive winning run and gives Rassie Erasmus’ side a perfect start to the inaugural Nations Championship. Their blend of power up front, creativity in the backline and defensive discipline highlighted why they remain among the favourites for every major tournament they enter.
For England, the defeat marks another difficult chapter as they continue searching for consistency against the world’s top-ranked teams. While there were moments of resilience, costly discipline and South Africa’s relentless intensity ultimately proved decisive.
With this commanding victory behind them, the Springboks now turn their attention to the next challenge in the Nations Championship, carrying momentum and confidence as they continue their pursuit of another international title.
