South African anime fans have something major to look forward to this year. Legendary English voice actor Christopher Sabat will appear at Comic Con Cape Town from 1 to 3 May 2026, bringing one of the most recognisable voices in anime to local fans.
Best known as the powerful Saiyan prince Vegeta in Dragon Ball Z and the stoic swordsman Roronoa Zoro in One Piece, Sabat has spent more than 25 years shaping some of anime’s most iconic characters.
His voice acting portfolio also includes the heroic All Might in My Hero Academia and the fearless captain Yami Sukehiro in Black Clover.
A nostalgic moment for South African fans
For many South Africans, Sabat’s work carries a strong sense of nostalgia.
Anime series like Dragon Ball Z became hugely popular when they aired on SABC 2, introducing a generation of viewers to Japanese animation. The after-school 5pm broadcasts quickly became a daily ritual for many young fans across the country.
Sabat also voiced several other beloved characters in the same series, including Piccolo, Yamcha, Mr. Popo, Korin, and Kami.
His appearance at Comic Con Cape Town will therefore be a special moment for longtime fans who grew up watching the series on local television.
A career across the biggest anime franchises
Sabat’s influence extends far beyond just a few iconic roles.
He has appeared in a long list of major anime titles, including:
- Solo Leveling (Baek Yoon-ho)
- Yu Yu Hakusho (Kazuma Kuwabara)
- Fullmetal Alchemist (Alex Louis Armstrong)
- Fairy Tail (Elfman Strauss)
- Vinland Saga (Snake)
Beyond voice acting, Sabat is also a director and producer. He founded Okratron 5000, an audio production company responsible for several well-known anime English dubs.
Exciting time for anime fans
Sabat’s visit also comes during an exciting period for the anime world.
During the recent Dragon Ball 40th anniversary celebration in Japan, fans were treated to news of a new continuation of the franchise, reportedly titled Dragon Ball Super: The Galactic Patrol.
Meanwhile, My Hero Academia concluded its final season last year to strong reception, while One Piece returns in April with its latest arc.
The anime adaptation of Black Clover is also expected to return later this year after a five-year hiatus.
