On Father’s Day, which also marks the conclusion of Men’s Health Awareness Week, abOVEnormal, Africa’s premier sports and fitness brand, together with its social investment arm, Seeds of Wellness (SOW) NPC, and in partnership with Re na le Lona Creative Centre for Children, will host a special tribute event honouring two iconic South African football figures: former Bafana Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba and the late football legend John “Shoes” Moshoeu.
The event seeks to celebrate the immense contribution these two football heroes have made to South African sport while highlighting the importance of men’s health, particularly the fight against cancer.
Coach Shakes Mashaba is currently battling prostate cancer and faces significant challenges in accessing the support he needs. The event will serve as the official launch of a fundraising campaign aimed at assisting him during this difficult period. As part of its commitment to the cause, abOVEnormal will dedicate a portion of the proceeds from sales of its Bafana Bafana c T-shirts throughout the FIFA World Cup period to supporting Coach Mashaba.
The tribute also honours the enduring legacy of John “Shoes” Moshoeu, who sadly passed away after a battle with cancer. Shoes was not only one of South Africa’s greatest footballers but also a passionate supporter and ambassador of the Re na le Lona Creative Centre for Children, where he dedicated his time and resources to uplifting young people through sport and creativity.
The timing of this initiative is particularly significant. It coincides with South Africa’s participation in the FIFA Club World Cup and takes place during a year in which the nation celebrates the 30th anniversary of Bafana Bafana’s historic 1996 Africa Cup of Nations triumph—a victorious squad that proudly featured John “Shoes” Moshoeu.
This Father’s Day gathering will bring together former players, coaches, community leaders, supporters, and young people to celebrate the values embodied by these football icons: resilience, leadership, service, and hope. It will also create a platform to raise awareness about men’s health issues, encourage early cancer screening, and mobilise support for those affected by serious illness.
Through this initiative, abOVEnormal, Seeds of Wellness NPC, and Re na le Lona Creative Centre reaffirm their commitment to using sport as a catalyst for social impact, community development, and the wellbeing of South Africans.
