We recently test-drove a Peugeot Landtrek 2.2D combined with an eight-speed automatic gearbox, and it was the best combination in terms of power and fuel consumption.
Why do we keep banging on about fuel this, fuel that?
Well…
Think about it this way: it would be better if your car ran on Fanta Grape, because two litres of that liquid cost R20. Fuel is extremely expensive, and every litre needs to take you further!
So, Isuzu has recently launched a 2.2-litre bi-turbodiesel, four-cylinder engine that generates 150 kW at 3,600 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 rpm to 2,600 rpm.
Funny enough, Isuzu also had a 1.9 diesel. Guess who else had a 1.9 TDI?
It’s French, and it rhymes with die Groot Trek…
Whilst you’re figuring that out, let me tell you about the Isuzu!
THE NEW ISUZU ENGINE

The 2.2-litre bi-turbodiesel, four-cylinder engine generates 150 kW at 3,600 rpm and 500 Nm from 1,600 rpm to 2,600 rpm.
But wait!
What does that actually mean?
Well, Isuzu gets the same power from this unit as the 2.8-litre Toyota. It is 5% faster in the 0–100 km/h sprint and delivers 12% stronger in-gear acceleration from 80–100 km/h compared with Isuzu’s own current 3.0-litre engine.
It also offers an 8% improvement in fuel efficiency.
Here is that word again… FUEL!
SO, WHEN ARE WE GETTING IT?
Well, the engine has been confirmed for the Thai market only, and our engines are produced at the Japanese firm’s Struandale plant rather than imported from Thailand.
BUT…
A little birdie told me we will get this engine!
And do you remember what MOS called me?
THE CAR SANGOMA! 😂

VERDICT
Basically, this combination is the sweet spot: power, torque and improved fuel efficiency.
I foresee this engine coming to South Africa,
Now, excuse me while I consult the ancestors!
