President Cyril Ramaphosa has sent his condolences to the families of two young South African sports stars, Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi midfielder Jaydon Adams (25) and rugby prop Lugobo “Bibo” Makwedini (25). Makwedini died last Friday after a suspected cardiac attack during practice at the Stade de la Gayonne in France. Adams was found dead at his home in Cape Town on Saturday.
Ramaphosa said it was particularly painful that South Africa was suffering the loss of the two outstanding young athletes at a time when the nation continue to immerse itself in the FIFA World Cup tournament, as well as the Springboks and Springbok Women matches against Scotland and the USA Eagles in Pretoria today.
“We are grateful for the joy and victories Jayden and Luqobo have given us and their teams as they lived their dreams and held South Africa’s name high on the score boards of global sport. May their soul rest in peace.”
In another condolences message to the family Sports and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie described Adams as a “rare find that is not discovered every day.” He lauded how Adams rose from the ranks of the Cape Town-based Stellenbosch Football Club, “to join best team in the African continent (Mamelodi Sundowns) and becomes part of the first Bafana Bafana team to advance to the World knockout stages in the history of the World Cup.”
McKenzie praised Adams “for rising above the gangsterism that plague his community to become a shining star to the broader South Africa” saying such players were not discovered every day.”
