Africa’s AI Moment Has Arrived – But the Continent Must Build More Than Just Algorithms

Africa is entering a new phase of its digital transformation. Across the continent, investments in data centres, fibre networks, cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence are accelerating, creating the foundations for a more connected digital economy.

But infrastructure alone will not determine Africa’s success.

The bigger question is whether Africa can build an ecosystem around that infrastructure — one that includes the connectivity, computing power, cybersecurity, skills and governance needed to ensure that Africans are not simply users of the next generation of technology, but participants in building it.

The infrastructure challenge

Artificial intelligence requires enormous amounts of computing power, data and connectivity. As African businesses increasingly adopt cloud services and AI-powered platforms, demand for reliable digital infrastructure will continue to grow.

Data centres are particularly important because they provide the computing environment required to process and store the enormous volumes of information generated by modern businesses, governments and consumers.

But having data centres on the continent is only part of the equation.

Reliable electricity, high-capacity fibre networks, affordable broadband and resilient cloud infrastructure are equally important.

This is where companies such as Cassava Technologies provide an interesting example of where Africa’s digital infrastructure is heading.

Cassava is building the digital backbone

Cassava Technologies has developed a vertically integrated technology ecosystem spanning fibre connectivity, data centres, cloud, cybersecurity, AI and digital payments.

Through its businesses, including Liquid Intelligent Technologies, Africa Data Centres, Liquid C2 and Cassava AI, the company is attempting to connect several layers of the digital economy rather than focusing on one technology in isolation. Cassava says its ecosystem operates across more than 30 markets, while its broader products and services reach customers in 94 countries.

Its connectivity business operates a major cross-border fibre network, while Africa Data Centres provides interconnected data-centre infrastructure. Those foundations are increasingly important as businesses move workloads into the cloud and begin experimenting with AI.

But perhaps the more interesting part of the strategy is what happens on top of that infrastructure.

Moving towards African AI compute

Cassava is investing in AI computing infrastructure designed to give African organisations access to the processing power required to develop and deploy AI applications.

The company has been deploying an NVIDIA-powered AI Factory in South Africa, with plans to expand the model into markets including Nigeria, Kenya, Egypt and Morocco. Cassava says the infrastructure is intended to give businesses, governments and researchers access to AI computing capacity while supporting the development of technologies using African data and languages.

That distinction matters.

AI is not simply software that can be downloaded onto a laptop. Training and running advanced AI models requires specialised computing infrastructure, including powerful GPUs and the data-centre environments capable of supporting them.

If more of that capacity is available within Africa, it creates the possibility of African organisations developing and processing AI applications closer to the communities they serve.

Cassava has also developed its Cassava AI Multi-Model Exchange, designed to give developers access to AI models and tools for building, fine-tuning and deploying applications.

The company’s approach is therefore an example of a broader shift taking place across the continent: building the infrastructure required to move from AI adoption towards AI creation.

AI needs African context

One of the biggest opportunities for African AI may not be simply copying technology developed in Silicon Valley, Europe or Asia.

It could be developing systems that understand African realities.

Language is one example.

Millions of Africans communicate in languages that have historically received far less attention from mainstream technology platforms than English, Mandarin, Spanish or other globally dominant languages.

Cassava says its AI infrastructure strategy includes work around African languages, beginning with Swahili and expanding towards languages including Zulu and Afrikaans.

That could become increasingly important as AI becomes integrated into education, government services, financial technology, healthcare and business applications.

An AI system that understands the language, economic conditions and cultural context of its users can potentially solve problems that generic global products were never specifically designed to address.

The cloud and cybersecurity layer

AI infrastructure also needs to be secure.

As African organisations move sensitive information into cloud environments and begin deploying AI systems, cybersecurity becomes inseparable from digital transformation.

Cassava’s ecosystem includes cloud and cybersecurity services alongside its connectivity and data-centre infrastructure. Its Liquid C2 business provides cloud security and managed cybersecurity services, while the company’s infrastructure strategy increasingly connects secure cloud environments with AI workloads.

That integration is important because Africa’s digital transformation cannot afford to treat security as an afterthought.

Banks, telecommunications companies, governments, hospitals and businesses are becoming increasingly dependent on digital systems. A larger digital economy creates more opportunities — but also a larger target for cybercriminals.

Africa needs the people behind the technology

Infrastructure can only go so far without people who know how to operate it.

The AI economy will require far more than software developers.

Africa will need cybersecurity specialists capable of protecting increasingly connected organisations, network engineers responsible for expanding connectivity, cloud architects managing growing digital workloads and data specialists capable of turning information into useful intelligence.

There will also be growing demand for professionals who understand the intersection between technology, business and regulation.

This makes digital education increasingly important.

The opportunity is particularly significant for young Africans. The continent has a young population that could become one of its greatest advantages in a rapidly changing global technology economy — but only if education and training keep pace with technological change.

The question is no longer simply whether young people can use AI.

It is whether they can become the people building, securing, managing and governing AI systems.

Internet governance matters too

There is another part of Africa’s digital transformation that receives considerably less attention: Internet governance.

As artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into global digital infrastructure, decisions surrounding domain names, cybersecurity, data governance and Internet stability will have consequences for African businesses and citizens.

Greater African participation in organisations such as ICANN and other multistakeholder Internet governance forums therefore matters.

Africa should not only be a market where global technology policies are implemented.

African governments, businesses, technical experts, researchers and civil society need to participate in the conversations that shape those policies.

From technology consumers to technology builders

For years, Africa has frequently been described as the world’s next great technology frontier.

Today, that description feels increasingly outdated.

The continent is no longer simply waiting to be connected.

Companies are building fibre networks. Data-centre capacity is expanding. Cloud services are becoming more accessible. African startups are developing new fintech and digital platforms. And companies such as Cassava are investing in the computing infrastructure needed for the next stage of the AI economy.

The next challenge is building enough local expertise and innovation around these foundations.

If Africa remains primarily a consumer of technologies developed elsewhere, much of the economic value generated by the AI revolution will continue to leave the continent.

The bigger opportunity is to develop African companies, intellectual property, infrastructure and expertise capable of competing beyond African borders.

The real AI opportunity

Artificial intelligence could become one of the most significant technological opportunities Africa has encountered.

But opportunity alone does not guarantee success.

Infrastructure must become more accessible and reliable. Education systems must produce more technology professionals. Businesses must invest in digital transformation and cybersecurity. Governments must create policies that encourage innovation while protecting privacy, security and competition.

And companies building the continent’s digital backbone will have an increasingly important role.

Cassava’s strategy demonstrates one possible model: connect the continent, build the data centres, provide cloud and cybersecurity services, add AI computing capacity and then create applications that solve problems relevant to African markets.

That is a much bigger proposition than simply introducing another AI chatbot.

The future of artificial intelligence in Africa will not be determined by who launches the next viral AI application.

It will be determined by who builds the networks, data centres, cloud platforms, computing capacity, cybersecurity capabilities, skills and institutions that allow innovation to flourish.

Africa has an opportunity to move beyond being an AI consumer and become a significant contributor to the global digital economy.

Companies such as Cassava show why the infrastructure race matters. But infrastructure is only the foundation.

The real opportunity is for Africa to build an ecosystem capable of creating, securing, governing and benefiting from the technologies that will define the next generation.

And that may ultimately be the difference between an Africa that simply uses the AI revolution and one that helps build it.
