For more than two decades, Lionel Messi carried the hopes, expectations and dreams of Argentine football. Now, one of the greatest international careers in football history has come to an end.
The 39-year-old has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, bringing down the curtain on a remarkable journey that began in 2005. Messi leaves international football as Argentina’s record appearance holder, with 207 caps and 125 goals.
His decision comes weeks after Argentina’s heartbreaking 1–0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Messi had hoped to end his international career with another World Cup triumph.
Instead, his final major tournament ended with Argentina finishing runners-up.
From heartbreak to immortality
Messi’s relationship with the Argentina shirt was not always an easy one.
For years, the Barcelona superstar faced criticism for failing to reproduce his club success on the international stage. Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany and suffered defeats in major Copa América finals.

“It was a painful decision”
Announcing his retirement, Messi acknowledged that walking away from Argentina was an emotional decision.
“It was a decision that hurt — and still hurts deeply — but I understand that the time has come.”
He also insisted that he had always given everything to the national team and to the Argentine shirt.
The announcement comes shortly after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, who played a major role in his son’s extraordinary football journey.
A career that changed Argentina
Messi’s international legacy is about more than statistics.
He inherited the enormous expectations that came with being Argentina’s next great star after Diego Maradona. For years, comparisons between the two dominated Argentine football.
Eventually, Messi created a legacy of his own.

That means football fans will still have opportunities to watch Messi at club level.
But the familiar image of Messi wearing Argentina’s famous blue-and-white stripes has now become part of football history.
A generation now takes over
Messi’s departure also opens the door for a new generation of Argentine players.
For a country that has spent two decades building its football identity around one extraordinary player, the challenge now is to move forward without him.
Messi himself has indicated that he believes it is time for younger players to take their opportunity.
