TEACHERS SPECIAL

No, I am not talking about that irritating kid who was obsessed with telling on you to the teacher for talking in class when the teacher wasn’t around. But what was up with that? I mean, what did teachers expect? A bunch of 11-year-olds were supposed to sit and do nothing while he was speaking to the young Ms Grobler? Story for another day.

I am talking about a car that, well, when I was growing up, told us you were a teacher with an upwardly mobile trajectory. Soon to be deputy head or head of department.

Another question: where did our teachers buy their clothes? No, wait, were all teachers told to be dull and wear browns and dull greens? Even their cars had similarly dull colours. The art teacher was the only one rocking a red Beetle, and she always wore flowy, white, floral, wavy dresses.

Ohhh, Ms Grobler, you were such a free mind.

I digress.

Teacher’s pet? I mean, special! Well, if you were an ambitious teacher, you drove a Toyota Corolla. And if you had arrived, you drove a Cressida. If you were an inspector, a 3.0-litre Cressida. Heck, if you were the president, you could also rock a Cressida 3.0-litre. (You don’t believe me check out what car Mandela drove out of prison with)

Albeit in green, gold, or some dreary combination of the two.

Why am I speaking about this?

Well, the Toyota Corolla has come a long way, and you can get it in RED. Imagine…I’m stupid at the best of times, but there is a new Corolla coming out, and Ms Grobler would approve. It’s stylish. Mr Bowser would not approve. He’d probably say it’s too flashy (Tammy would probably agree with Mr Bouser . Blimming teacher’s pet).

And GOOD!… Once a car is liked by bureaucrats and teachers of our time, sexiness flies out the window. Unless, well, you’re Ms Grobler.

Let me tell you more about this good-looking, funky, tech-savvy Corolla. I can’t believe I just used all those words in one sentence with Corolla.

This will be the 13th generation for the 2028 model year, and it will bring with it a new array of powertrains, using what Toyota calls a multi-energy approach. Basically, many will have hybrid engines. And we like hybrids. Hybrids are like diet cooldrink: all the taste, but without the sugar. (That makes sense in my brain.) There will also be BEV and petrol options.

Engines

We have it on good authority that the Corolla, along with other future Toyota hybrids, will be powered by a new family of 1.5-litre four-cylinder engines designed for use in a hybrid system. The engines will come in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms, and are designed to be smaller and more efficient.

Looks

This is where it wins. Just look at it:

Verdict

We love it, and I think Ms Grobler would approve.
