Johannesburg – In a major boost for South African television, eMedia and Netflix have announced a landmark content licensing partnership that will bring selected e.tv original productions to streaming audiences across Africa. The agreement marks a significant step in expanding the reach of locally produced entertainment beyond traditional television.
The partnership launches with The Four of Us, e.tv’s new primetime drama produced by Tshedza Pictures. Under the agreement, new episodes will premiere on e.tv at 8:00 pm CAT before becoming available to stream on Netflix across Africa from 9:00 am the following day.
The drama features an all-star South African cast, including Sindi Dlathu, Sdumo Mtshali, Thembinkosi Mthembu, Dumisani Dlamini, Rami Chuene, Hope Mbhele, and Kealeboga Masango. It premiered on e.tv on 29 June, with Netflix making episodes available shortly afterwards under the new agreement.
According to eMedia Chief Content Officer Marlon Davids, the partnership reflects the broadcaster’s evolving strategy to ensure South African productions reach wider audiences. Netflix’s Vice President of Content for the Middle East and Africa, Ben Amadasun, described the collaboration as an exciting new chapter for local storytelling as Netflix celebrates a decade of operations in South Africa.
The agreement also signals growing international confidence in South Africa’s television industry. By making local dramas available on one of the world’s largest streaming platforms, producers have an opportunity to showcase South African talent, culture and storytelling to millions of viewers across the continent.
While The Four of Us is the first title announced under the deal, both companies have indicated that additional e.tv productions could be added in the future, opening the door for more South African content to find audiences beyond the country’s borders.
As streaming continues to reshape the entertainment landscape, the partnership represents an important milestone for South Africa’s creative industry, blending the reach of free-to-air television with the global accessibility of digital platforms.
