South Africa becomes first market to receive the all-new Patrol design-inspired Nissan TEKTON

by Len Kalane

Nissan is accelerating its bold, SUV-led South African resurgence with the official launch today of the all-new Nissan TEKTON.

Designed to mirror the striking features of the flagship Nissan Patrol, the new TEKTON promises a new level of refinement, driving enjoyment and space in the compact SUV segment.

The Nissan TEKTON launch was the highlight of a three-day festival of Nissan, encompassing an African Media Day and an investor conference, and culminating in the South African Dealer of the Year gala function. A fleet and employee day followed on the third and final day of the festival.

Nissan’s new long-term direction, says Jordi Vila, President, Nissan Africa, is guided by its customer-centric vision, “Mobility Intelligence for Everyday Life”, and is designed to drive sustainable competitive advantage through next-generation technologies, a streamlined product portfolio, a redefined global market approach and an industrial model organised around clearly defined vehicle families.

“Nissan is committed to Africa. This is a continent with incredible potential and is truly the world’s last automotive frontier. We see South Africa as a critical gateway to unlocking the potential of the African Century.”

Nissan will launch a range of new models in South Africa this year and, to date, has introduced the new Nissan X-TRAIL. The upgraded Nissan Navara and the eighth generation of the iconic Nissan Patrol are scheduled for this fiscal year, as is a special-edition Nissan X-TRAIL, with further product launches planned for FY27.

Mohamed Samad, Managing Director, Nissan Africa, says Africa’s automotive growth will be powered by the SUV segment and that the festival is therefore an important regional milestone. “The launch of the all-new Nissan TEKTON in South Africa illustrates the evolution of our regional strategy: bringing globally relevant products to African customers, supported by strong market insight, a trusted dealer network and a commitment to long-term value. Our focus is clear: to compete with purpose, earn customer confidence every day and build a Nissan brand ready for Africa’s future.”

Juan Wheeler, Managing Director, Nissan South Africa, says the launch of TEKTON comes at a defining moment for the local business. “South Africans know Nissan. For 65 years, our vehicles have been part of daily life, and with that legacy comes the responsibility to introduce models that speak to the real needs of this market. It’s a story built on trust, resilience, people and products that have moved generations.”

“Great automotive brands are built through moments that connect product, people and purpose,” said Ramy Mohareb, Head of Brand and Communications, Nissan Africa. “With its bold, Patrol-inspired design, smart connectivity, practical space and confident turbocharged performance, the TEKTON is crafted to stand out. It is designed for an important market segment – young families making their first move up – and we have no doubt that it will become another iconic Nissan nameplate in the SUV segment.”

The TEKTON reflects the profound progress being made under Nissan’s strategic business plan, demonstrating how the brand’s vision is translating into a stronger, more competitive product portfolio and targeted market expansion.

Manufactured in Chennai, India, as part of a vital global export hub supplying 50 markets across the Middle East and Africa, the TEKTON is tailored to meet evolving customer expectations in one of the world’s most fiercely contested automotive segments.

Patrol-inspired design

The TEKTON carries Nissan’s proud 75-year SUV heritage with an unmistakable road presence and a clear nod to the flagship Nissan Patrol. Its sleek, well-proportioned silhouette features sculpted lines, muscular arches, aero-tuned spoilers, flush roof rails and a full-width chrome-accented grille.

Up front, signature C-shaped LED connecting headlamps with daytime running lights create a commanding identity that mirrors the upcoming new Nissan Patrol. At the rear, the vehicle boasts powerful proportions anchored by SynchroFlow C-shaped connected LED tail lamps and a double-C contrast skid plate. All models in the line-up are equipped with LED lights both front and rear.

The Patrol-inspired design is further emphasised by the squared-off bonnet, which leads the eye to large, squared-off fenders and a faux skid plate integrated into the front bumper.

Lastly, with a choice of 17-inch and 18-inch wheels and an impressive ground clearance of 212 mm, the TEKTON does justice to the family resemblance and Nissan SUV styling it shares with the new Nissan Patrol.

Turbo-only petrol powertrains

The TEKTON will offer turbo-petrol engines exclusively across the range. Buyers can choose between two advanced turbo-petrol engines:

·       1.0-litre turbo three-cylinder: Paired with a smooth six-speed manual transmission, producing 74 kW and 160 Nm of torque.

·       1.3-litre turbo four-cylinder: Delivers a powerful 120 kW and 260 Nm of torque to the front wheels via a responsive dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

In-built luxury and connectivity

Designed around real-world customer priorities, the cabin delivers everyday practicality alongside class-leading space, highlighted by a 700-litre luggage compartment. Capacity increases to 1 789 litres with the rear seats folded down.

All models feature a vibrant 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, alongside a fully digital instrument cluster and a chunky e-shifter gear lever with paddle shifters. All models except the Visia 1.0 are fitted with an electronic parking brake.

Higher grades (Tekna and Tekna+) add premium amenities such as dual-zone climate control, wireless smartphone charging, push-button start, ventilated front seats for the driver and front passenger, luxury leatherette upholstery, a powered driver’s seat and an exclusive two-tone exterior paint scheme, with a powered tailgate on the flagship model.

Uncompromising safety and driver assistance

Safety remains a foundational pillar of all new Nissan models.

Across the entire range, safety equipment includes six airbags, electronic stability control (ESC), ABS with all-round disc brakes, hill-start assist, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and tyre-pressure monitoring.

Higher trim levels elevate protection further with a Multi View Camera, rain-sensing wipers and an advanced suite of driver assistance systems (ADAS). These active technologies include Lane Keep Assist, Blind Spot Monitoring, Traffic Sign Recognition, Front Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Braking and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.

Nissan Patrol

As the Nissan Patrol inspired the design and engineering of the Nissan TEKTON, it was only fitting that Nissan showcase its upcoming flagship at the unveiling of the TEKTON.

The new Nissan Patrol is scheduled for local introduction in the first quarter of 2027 when it will step up as the pinnacle of the Nissan line-up in South Africa.

This eighth-generation model is the most advanced and capable Nissan Patrol to date. The vehicle is new from the ground up and now features a turbo-charged petrol V6 engine that traces its lineage back to the giant-killing Nissan GT-R. The engine delivers 317 kW and a massive 700 Nm of torque while using 25% less fuel than its predecessor.

As the new flagship, the Nissan Patrol will offer a comprehensive range of luxury and off-road features, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and a modern design that is bound to turn heads.

Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek

A special edition of the newly released Nissan X-Trail was also on display at the Nissan Festival and the unveiling of the Nissan TEKTON.

The Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek edition is based on the flagship model, which means it comes fully equipped with a comprehensive ADAS suite, seven seats, all-wheel drive and luxury features such as an all-leather interior, 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels and dual-zone climate control.

The Rock Creek takes this canvas and adds a unique rugged style that is bound to turn heads.

The model is painted in a custom colour named Baja Storm and features red Nissan badging, which is always reserved for flagship models. It also has a unique lower-bumper design with an integrated bash plate and a darkened roof for a stylish two-tone look.

The red badging is repeated inside the X-Trail cabin, where the Rock Creek edition also features red double stitching on the soft-touch dashboard, doors and centre console. Additional features, such as Hill Descent Control, ensure that the Nissan X-Trail Rock Creek edition leaves its owner and driver wanting nothing.
