BREAKING: Bafana Bafana’s Jayden Adams Dies at 25, Weeks After World Cup Debut

by Len Kalane

South African football is mourning the death of Jayden Adams, the Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, who died on Saturday, 11 July 2026, at the age of 25. The news broke through his club and national team circles rather than an official statement, and as of this writing, no cause of death has been confirmed.

No formal statement has been issued by Mamelodi Sundowns or the South African Football Association. Instead, confirmation came from Adams’ mentor, Brendine Johnson, who spoke on the family’s behalf to local outlets, including Soccer Laduma. Johnson described the family as still processing the shock and asked that their privacy be respected while they come to terms with the loss. He noted that he had spoken with Adams only two days earlier, and that Adams had seemed hopeful and in good spirits following his return from the World Cup.

Sundowns has not confirmed or denied details publicly, reportedly out of consideration for the family. The cause of death has not been disclosed by any club, federation, or family representative, and it remains unconfirmed at this time.

Adams signed his first professional contract in 2020, going on to become a key player for Stellenbosch FC’s first team. His performances there led to a move to Mamelodi Sundowns — one of South Africa’s most decorated clubs, nicknamed “the Brazilians” — where he continued to develop into one of the Premier Soccer League’s standout young midfielders.

Off the pitch, Adams was known for his humility, and teammates and observers pointed to a maturity and leadership quality in how he carried himself on it, well beyond what is typical for a player his age.

Adams broke into the senior Bafana Bafana setup and was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d’Ivoire, a tournament that marked a broader resurgence for the national team on the continental stage.

That form carried him into South Africa’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America. Adams started in the group-stage matches against Mexico and Czechia, and came on as a substitute in South Africa’s win over South Korea. He was an unused substitute when Bafana Bafana’s tournament ended with a 1-0 defeat to Canada in the Round of 32.

After the tournament, Adams was among eight Sundowns players who featured for South Africa at the World Cup and were subsequently given two extra weeks of leave before returning to pre-season training. He was still on that break at the time of his death.

Tributes have begun coming in from across South African football, though verified statements remain limited given how recently the news broke. Soccer Laduma extended condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, the national team, and the wider football community. Further details, including funeral arrangements, are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.

This account reflects only information confirmed by Adams’ family representative and corroborated club/media reporting as of 11 July 2026. Cause of death has not been established, and this piece deliberately excludes unverified claims circulating on social media and in unconfirmed tabloid reports.
